For the very first time, Dr Martin Couney's story will be told in the form of a feature-length documentary film!
Dr Couney: Babies of the Boardwalk will take you on a carnivalesque journey back in time to the Coney Island Midways and exhibitions of nearly a century ago. Drawing on stunning photographs and fantastical film footage of an era long gone, the story unfolds. From his humble beginnings of shtetl life in Eastern Europe, Dr. Couney would go on to save thousands of premature babies. Desperate parents turned away by hospitals and mainstream doctors shuttled their teeny tiny infants in shoeboxes seeking his lifesaving incubators.
Dr. Martin Couney presented his first infant incubator show at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha. He then brought the show to the World's Fair in 1901, going on to build and maintain two lifesaving exhibits in Coney Island, one in Luna Park from 1903 until 1943, and another in Dreamland from 1904 until the historic and devastating fire of 1911.
A European showman and early pioneer of neonatal technology, Dr. Couney is acclaimed as one of the first public advocates of saving the lives of premature babies, who were then considered too weak to survive to adulthood. His Coney Island Infantorium was in full operation for 40 years, supported through the 25¢ tickets sold to see the Infant Incubator Show. Over his 50-year career, his 'Infantoriums' were credited with saving more than 7,000 babies of all races, religions, and ethnicities.
